Nissan’s Ambition 2030 Plans Unveiled

Nissan is advancing on its transformative path towards a fully electric vehicle lineup in Europe. In a commitment to harmonize with regulatory mandates and global shifts, the automaker announced in September 2023 its unwavering dedication to achieving a 100 percent electric vehicle (EV) adoption in Europe by 2030. This means that all new Nissan models introduced in the region will exclusively be electric. This proclamation not only reinforces automotive production goals aligned with global net-zero initiatives but also underscores the pivotal role international neutrality efforts play in shaping the objectives of automotive manufacturers.
Nissan, with its experience in crafting vehicles in the United Kingdom and a strong background in crossovers and electric technology, is dedicated to reaching carbon neutrality. According to Makoto Uchida, Nissan’s President and CEO, electric vehicles (EVs) represent the ultimate mobility solution, with over a million customers already experiencing the benefits of Nissan’s electric vehicles. Uchida underlined that there’s no turning back from this commitment. Nissan’s route to carbon neutrality revolves around electric vehicles powered by renewable energy, in line with the company’s Ambition 2030 vision.
Nissan’s firm dedication is in sync with some major milestones for its European Design and Research and Development (R&D) teams, who are diligently advancing innovative projects in cutting-edge technology and future vehicles. For instance, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Nissan Design Europe, the company introduced the Concept 20-23, an urban electric vehicle concept located near Nissan Design Europe (NDE) in Paddington, London. Simultaneously, at the Nissan Technical Center Europe (NTCE), which is observing its 35th anniversary in 2023, the United Kingdom is playing host to a new real-world study on autonomous driving called evolvAD. This study is primarily focused on residential and rural roads and receives support from the UK government. Nissan emphasized that these endeavors are integral parts of a continuing investment program exceeding $42.4 million, spanning both sites. This comprehensive program encompasses enhancements in design tools, resources, facility upgrades, the addition of more staff at Nissan Design Europe, and the introduction of new facilities and technological advancements.
As part of the Ambition 2030 initiative, the brand is set to introduce 27 electrified vehicles worldwide, including 19 fully electric models, by 2030. During this period, the company is also working on implementing cobalt-free technology to reduce the cost of electric vehicle batteries by 65 percent by the 2028 fiscal year. Nissan’s ambitions extend to launching electric vehicles equipped with solid-state batteries by the 2028 model year, enhancing performance and expanding its electric vehicle offerings.
Importantly, official statements indicate that solid-state batteries are poised to not only cut charging times by one-third but also improve the efficiency and accessibility of electric vehicles. Furthermore, Nissan anticipates that solid-state batteries will bring down the cost of battery packs to $75 per kilowatt-hour by 2028. Additionally, Nissan has confirmed two new electric vehicles for the European market. One of them is a compact electric vehicle that will take over as the entry-level model in place of the iconic Nissan Micra, while the other will be produced at Nissan’s advanced plant in Sunderland, United Kingdom.
